Festive: Christmas Music
About the course
We are delighted to be launching in Guildford with a ‘Taster’ course, devoted to festive, seasonal music.
The course will run from Friday morning to Saturday lunchtime, and will conclude with a lunchtime concert featuring course music and carols for all.
The course includes whole-group singing including musical games and warm-up exercises, small group vocal coaching with a singing coach, music theory, history and appreciation. Every care will be taken to provide age and experience-appropriate tuition. Morning and afternoon sessions include breaks for juice and biscuits (provided by the course), and a lunch break (children should bring packed lunches).
Friday will begin at 9.30 (registration from 9.00) and concludes at 3.30 (with a short, informal concert at 3.15). Saturday will begin at 10.00 and conclude with a concert at 12.30, to which family and friends are most welcome.
About the venue
St Nicholas’ church is the third church on this site, the first of which dates to pre-13th century, which suffered for being too close to the river. The church is on the left bank of the River Wey at the foot of the High Street, in Guildford. It is one of the three ancient parishes of the town, whose records first date back to 1581.
The highly decorated West Wall was painted by Joseph Pippet in 1893, and whose company worked closely with Augustus Pugin during the Catholic rivival; the fabulous stained glass windows, made by Clayton and Bell and the highly decorated stone font, carved by master mason, Thomas Earp (1828 – 1893). HIs most famous piece is the Eleanor Cross, at Charing Cross station, London.
Notable parishners of this church included John Mason Neale who composed Good King Wenceslas and, O happy band of pilgrims. Comical and narrative book writer P.G. Wodehouse was baptised with the waters of the font here.
A beautiful church with a thriving music community and choir.
