About the course

NB This course excludes 5th April which is a bank holiday

We are excited to be launching our first course in Hong Kong, in the splendid surroundings of St John’s Cathedral.

The Oxford and Cambridge Singing School will be led by three experts in choral music and children’s singing: Dr Edward Wickham (St Catharine’s College, Cambridge), Tom Allery (Worcester College, Oxford), and Felix Yeung, Director of Music at St John’s Cathedral, Hong Kong (find out more about our course leaders here.) The course includes training in singing technique, music theory and history, and experience of the finest classical choral music. The aim of the course is to teach a broad range of musical skills as well as instill a deep love of choral music. Our courses are open to children of all experience, and we tailor our coaching to accommodate all levels of attainment.

Course fee: 3600 HKD.

Book by January 1 2018 for a 20% reduction.

A typical day will begin at 9.30 (registration from 9 am) and consists of a morning warm-up session followed by full choir practice; a mid-morning break and smaller group sessions. After lunch, there will be further group sessions, focusing on music reading and theory before a final full choir practice, another short break and a final sing-through before the concert. Break time juice and biscuits are provided; children are asked to bring their own packed lunches. The day concludes with an informal concert to which parents are invited; and the end of the course with a special concert featuring the music rehearsed during the entire course. The course day ends at 3.30 pm.

About the venue

St. John’s Cathedral ( Chinese: 聖約翰座堂), officially The Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist and located at 4  Garden Road, Central, stands in the heart of the city’s financial downtown district.

St. John’s Cathedral is the oldest surviving Western ecclesiastical building in Hong Kong, and the oldest Anglican church in the Far East, housing the seat of the Archbishop of Hong Kong.

St John’s Cathedral is a much used and much loved building, holding many services there each week to diverse cultural communities.

Music has been an integral part of workship at St John’s since in the 1850’s. Besides the main cathedral choir, there are six other choirs for services in Mandarin, Pilipino and Cantonese, the Children & Family service, and the monthly Choral Evensong.
